Edward Hamer 1823-1862
Edward Hamer, born 13 January 1823 in Llandinam, Montgomeryshire. His parents were Richard and Margaret (nee Davies). He was baptised on 5th February 1823 in the Bethel Calvinistic Methodist Chapel in Llanidloes. His family were farmers - probably tenant farmers which meant that their landlords had total control over them. So Edward and his family lived at Blaenyglyn near Llandinam and would have been very poor and hardworking with little reward and no security. Edward married Elizabeth Price (a remarkable woman) on 19th September 1846 at the Baptist Church, Newchapel near Llanidloes. They had 8 children - David, Edward, Richard, Mary-Jane, Thomas, John, William and Pryce. His son Richard is my great grandfather. Edward died quite young - in 1862, only 39 year old. The death certificate indicates the cause of death as PHTHISIS which is an old fashioned term for pulmonary tubercolosis and probably involved a wasting away of the body.
